The South West Dementia Brain Bank exists to support dementia research that has the potential to contribute to our understanding of the underlying diseases or to be of value to those affected and their families.
With funding from BRACE, Alzheimer’s Research UK and Alzheimer’s Society through Brains for Dementia Research. The service celebrated its 40th Anniversary on the 2nd December 2024 – this playlist brings together talks from centre Director Professor Patrick Kehoe and Brain Bank Manager Dr Laura Palmer.
Dr Laura Palmer reflects on the history and achievements of the Brain Bank, established in 1984 by Professor Gordon Wilcock and supported by BRACE since 1987. Laura showcases the brain banks vital role in advancing dementia research. She highlights the contributions of donors, families, and researchers in creating a resource that has supported countless studies and made significant strides in understanding and diagnosing dementia. This inspiring talk celebrates the past, present, and future of a world-leading research initiative dedicated to improving lives.
Professor Patrick Kehoe discussed the Southwest Dementia Brain Bank’s evolution, contributions, and the profound impact of brain tissue research on understanding dementia and cerebrovascular diseases. He delves into the early days of the Brain Bank, from its origins under Professor Gordon Wilcock to its transformation into a world-leading resource. Highlighting key collaborations and innovations, he discusses breakthroughs in standardising brain tissue analysis, advancements in vascular cognitive impairment research, and the development of international criteria for post-mortem studies.
