Tell us a little about yourself:
I grew up in and was educated in the UK then moved to the USA to take up a faculty position at Washington University in 1992. In 2015 I moved to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York to become the Director of the Ronald M. Loeb Center for Alzheimer’s disease. In 2021 I became Chair of the Department of Genetics & Genomic Sciences at Mount Sinai. I have worked on the genetics of AD and FTD since 1987.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I am an avid tennis fan and go to the US Open every year with friends.
Why did you choose to work in dementia research?
I was working on Down Syndrome and chromosome 21 at the Institute for Neurology in London when APP and AD were mapped to the same chromosome. John Hardy offered me a position to join his team at St Mary’s, and I never looked back.
What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
Dont be afraid to take risks, John and I took a chance on each other in 1987….

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, yes one of the best books I have read in a while
