Name:
Dr Imre Lengyel
Job title:
Reader (Associate professor) and representative of the ISTAART Eye as a Biomarker for AD PIA
Place of work / study:
Queen’s University Belfast
Area of Research:
Eye imaging as a biomarker for Alzheimer’s Disease, DS and MS
How is your work funded?
MRC, NIH Fight fo Sight, Macula Society, Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer’s research UK
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am particularly interested in how we could use the eye as a less expensive, better tolerated and faster marker to monitor the progression of neurodegeneration. We do clinical eye imaging and use postmortem tissues to generate molecular and high-resolution anatomical confirmation for the changes we see in eye images.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I like good wine and classical music, especially cello, though cannot play
Why did you choose to work in dementia?
I used to work on the molecular basis of learning and memory before becoming interested in how degenmerative conditions affect normal learning. From there it was a “quick” but painful jump to use the eye as a surrogate to brain changes.
What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
The key word is GRIT: perseverance will lead to success however hard the road to success is. But listen to advice before to choose your what you want to pursue.
What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
Eco-neurobiology, and how the Environment Shapes Our Brains by Dr Andreas Grabrucker. Very interesting reading and highly recommend it.
