Tell us a little about yourself:

My full name is Diego Andree Bustamante Paytan, but everyone calls me Diego. I’m from Lima, Peru, and I’m a Peruvian medical doctor currently pursuing a master’s degree in epidemiology. I am passionate about advancing dementia research and improving public health in rural communities, especially in Latin America—a vision that I believe I share with my mentor, Dr. Nilton Custodio.

I am also an ISTAART Ambassador.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I’m a guitarist in a rock band, a cat lover, and an amateur writer.

Why did you choose to work in dementia research?

When I became a doctor, I wanted to do more than just treat patients—I aimed to make a significant impact on community health, especially in rural areas. This desire was influenced by my grandfather, who is from the Quechua people, and my connection to my ancestors. During my time working with the Aymara community, I recognized the urgent need for greater visibility and research in regions with limited access to healthcare. I encountered many patients with dementia, but there was a notable lack of focus on this public health issue. This experience motivated me to dedicate my efforts to improving the understanding and management of dementia in underserved communities.

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Don’t be afraid to fail. The first step is always the hardest.

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

None

Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?

I enjoy traveling, reading, going to the theater, and also having coffee with friends and family while talking about life
