SPIN Dementia Network+ (SPIN-D) Sandpit Event
March 3
SPIN Dementia Network+ (SPIN-D) is holding the first of a series of sandpit events on 3rd March in Exeter. We invite expressions of interest to attend this event from researchers working in areas that relate to the SPIN-D network+ remit. SPIN-D (Sustainable Prevention, Innovation and iNvolvement for dementia) is focussed on reducing the risk of dementia, delaying the onset of early symptoms, and lessening the impact of dementia through appropriate support and care.
The deadline for the expression of interest is Tuesday 4th February and we will inform those we would like to invite by Friday 7th February by email.
Outcomes from the sandpit are intended to be:
1. A number of strong ideas for research projects, with plans for progressing these and applying for appropriate funding
2. A position paper relating to the discussions held within the event around involvement in research, and the design of new projects to meet the needs of those people to which they are aimed
Involvement with those who have lived experience of dementia is a critical theme running throughout the network’s activities. This sandpit will include those with experience of dementia, and of research projects where these people are integrated within the primary research team leading to successful outcomes.
In the context of understanding and preventing the development of dementia, the Lancet report has set out early to later life risk factors that could affect the development of dementia, which is an area where further research is needed to understand the causative factors that could be playing a role throughout people’s lives.
Within the programme for the day, one focus will be on opportunities for funding which could be applied for to develop the ideas planned within the sandpit.
Further information about the network, including a draft agenda for the sandpit, is available here: https://spindementianet.org/.
The sandpit event will be held in person, with hybrid links to some participants as needed.

If over subscribed we will select participants in a way that maximises diversity of discipline, career stage and relevance of research area to underserved communities.
