A weekly gathering to discuss careers and research topics, inspired by 17th and 18th century salons from Paris, with a modern twist. These sessions combine livestreams, guest speakers and group chat to exchange ideas, challenge, influence, inspire and educate.

In this session we talk about PhD’ing as a Mature Student.

What unique challenges and advantages do mature students bring to the demanding journey of a PhD in dementia research? Join us in Dementia Researcher Salon as we explore the experience of pursuing a PhD later in life. This discussion will provoke you to rethink preconceived notions about age in academia, examining how life experience, career backgrounds, and diverse perspectives can enrich research – proving that you’re never ‘too old’. Our speakers and that chat will explore the balancing act of personal commitments and academic pursuits, how live doesn’t have to get in the way, and discuss strategies for success. Engage with us to uncover how mature students are redefining the PhD journey and making impactful contributions to dementia research.

Speakers

Dr James Watson – is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of Liverpool. He is interested in dementia care, inequities and inequalities in health outcomes, care access and on-going support among people with dementia and unpaid carers, the quality and inequalities in end-of-life and palliative care, and support and experiences of unpaid carers. With a background in the NHS and NHS Leadership he has used mixed-methods research, using data science methods in quantitative research and been part of research teams conducting qualitative research into participants experiences.

Ellice Parkinson – is finishing up her PhD at University of East Anglia, and now working at Health Innovation East. Ellice explored how people living with dementia consume drinks in care homes within 2 studies. I examined online posts from the ‘Dementia Talking Point’ forum, using thematic discourse analysis, to explore how people living with Dementia drink in long-term care settings (D-DRINC Study B). I conducted a 5 month ethnography in a care home (D-DRINC Study A), to observe how staff and residents’ actions, language, non-verbal cues, and care home routines and practices may lead to someone living with dementia consuming drinks. These studies generated nuanced and contextualised knowledge on the topic of drinking in care homes.

Programme

The format of the event is a 30 minute livestream where the speakers will each present their thoughts on this topic for 10 minutes each, the host will then ask questions and the livestream will end. The speakers will then join the online chat and interact with the audience, answering questions and giving those who attended a chance to share their thoughts on the topic.
