Effective Communication in a Diverse Team
July 15 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
The workshop organised by the Alzheimer’s Research UK London Network will focus on Awareness, Action and Advocacy to tackle Inequalities in Communication.
Communication in professional settings is complicated. Information can get lost, or instructions can be unclear, causing additional workload or stress. How we communicate is influenced by factors, like our personality, values, mood, cultural background and languages. These factors are shaped by our background and experiences, like our culture and ethnicity, training, and occupational background.
Workshop will cover following aspects of effective communication:
- We will discuss inequalities in communication and sources of microaggression.
- The group exercise will critically review what influences our daily communication, and how different speakers and receivers perceive messages sent via different modes (e.g., face-to-face or email) and styles of communication.
- By understanding complex interactional patterns, we will investigate how changing our own communication behaviour will change that of others.
Speakers:
Dr. Robin Lerner, Strategic Head of Impact & Research, The Centre for Emotional Health
Dr. Petra Proitsi, Reader in Genetic Epidemiology, Wolfson Institute of Population Health, Queen Mary University of London.
Dr. Christina Derkson, Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Health Psychology, Centre for Cancer Screening, Prevention and Early Diagnosis, Queen Mary University of London.
