Digital Health Seminar

Registration is open for an upcoming seminar hosted by the Digital Health, Ageing Innovation and Inclusion theme of the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre.
This seminar presents two key talks in the area of digital health:
- Is digital health doing enough to enable Learning Health Systems? Fact, Fiction and somewhere in between – Professor Edward Meinert
- Digital Innovations in Parkinson’s Care and Research – Professor Camille Carroll
Lunch will be served after the seminar to give the opportunity to network with other theme members and ask any further questions from our speakers.

About the speakers:
Edward Meinert
Professor of Digital Health and Clinical Artificial Intelligence at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University. Prof. Meinert’s research is centred on software engineering and evaluating digital technology in healthcare. His primary research interests include clinical artificial intelligence, robotic process automation and digital health, aiming to enhance population health insight. He is particularly interested in applications to novel regulatory and therapeutic contexts, such as adaptive and long-term trials focused on chronic disease management and preventive medicine, where there are significant opportunities to derive insight from improved data analytics and where standards are emerging.
The use of health information technologies (HITs) has been associated with positive benefits, such as improved health outcomes and enhanced health services. Results from empirical studies report the potential benefits of HITs in preventive medicine measures such as primary prevention. While significant efforts are underway to establish frameworks to manage digital services, much work is required to determine how these technologies can improve health outcomes sustainably. Prof. Meinert aims to develop evidence to inform improvement in the design of technologies and to influence policy to promote the adoption of systems that achieve positive health impact.
Camille Carroll
Professor of Clinical Neuroscience and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Newcastle University. Her research is focused on disease modification and the use of digital health technologies for monitoring and personalised care in Parkinson’s. Prof. Carroll was the chief investigator of a multi-centre clinical trial of simvastatin as a disease modifying agent in Parkinson’s disease (PD STAT). She co-leads the Edmond J Safra ACT-PD initiative, developing a multi-arm, multi-stage trial platform for disease modifying interventions in Parkinson’s.
Professor Carroll is developing digital tools to support patient self-management and digitally-enabled care. In her role as NIHR Clinical Research Network National Specialty Lead for Neurodegenerative Diseases, overseeing a balanced clinical trial portfolio in neurodegenerative disorders and leads the Remote Methods of Trial Delivery working group. She has been principal and UK lead investigator for multiple commercial interventional trials, and is a member/chair of several trial steering and data monitoring committees. She is Clinical co-Director of the Parkinson’s Excellence Network in the UK and has been internationally recognized for her patient-centred approach, broadening the opportunity for Parkinson’s research and improving support for patient care and self-management.
