Tell us a little about yourself:
I’m Co-Director at Innovations in Dementia CIC, my particular interests are the empowerment and inclusion of people with dementia, and the application of research evidence to practice.
As a qualified social worker, my has experience comes from within the NHS, Local Authorities and the voluntary sector in many areas of adult social care. In the 1990s, I managed the Scarborough/ Ryedale Kings Fund Carers Project and later set up the Princess Royal Trust Carers Resource. I spent five years as Senior Researcher with the independent consultancy, Acton Shapiro, prior to joining Joseph Rowntree Foundation as Programme Manager in April 2006, where I led JRF’s Dementia without Walls programme.
I gained a first degree in English and Philosophy from Exeter University and an MSc in Applied Social Studies from Oxford University. I am now exploring lives as a resident of the remote Western Isles of Scotland, and love walking, off-road running and all things wild.

Why did you choose to work in dementia?
Dementia affects so many individuals and sadly is still under researched and underfunded. Unfortunately, I’ve seen first-hand how dementia can completely change people you love and how it not only affects them but all those around them – I wanted to research something I was passionate about – the brain and helping people.
