Biomarkers for Neurodegenerative Diseases Course

Biomarkers are increasingly required for effective research into neurodegenerative diseases. They are critical for diagnosis, disease monitoring and will be key for measuring target engagement and efficacy of disease modifying therapies.
Early career researchers working in the field of neurodegeneration require a working knowledge of a range of biomarkers to correctly interpret scientific literature and to design and conduct successful and ambitious research studies.
The University of Gothenburg, University College London, and BarcelonaBeta Brain Research Center are leading international centres with complementary expertise in fluid and imaging biomarkers. Together, we offer this unique course to early career researchers to strengthen the quality of biomarker training across the different institutions and beyond, as well as to foster new research collaborations and providing delegates with outstanding networking opportunities. The course is led by Dr Michael Scholl, Dr Ross Paterson and Dr Aitana Sogorb Esteve.
What is it?
The course aims at providing basic and practical knowledge of bodily fluid and neuroimaging-based biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases with a strong focus on Alzheimer’s disease.
Participants will be expected to achieve a broad understanding of the following brain imaging and neurochemistry technologies used as research and clinical tools in neurodegenerative diseases:
- Neurochemistry (fluid-based biomarkers):
» Biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid
» Biomarkers in blood - Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Positron emission tomography (PET)
- Digital biomarkers / Remote cognitive testing
The experts will discuss the following:
- Basic concepts of image- and fluid-based biomarker research
- Temporal, pathogenic, and spatial anatomical biomarkers related to neurodegenerative diseases
- Experiences of best practices to conduct and plan a research project within their field of expertise and how to use the discussed biomarkers
- State-of-the-art tools and latest techniques to evaluate biomarker data
- Current practice and interpretation of different biomarker profiles in neurodegenerative diseases
- Experiences in analyzing the predictive value of the respective biomarkers in different conditions.

The next course will take place at UCL Queen Square, London, UK, on May 12-16.
Who can attend?
PhD students, early postdoctoral fellows, clinicians or neuroscientists with a background in the medical, biological or engineering sciences who are actively conducting research in neurodegenerative diseases. The workshop is aimed at early career researchers, 50 positions are available. No exclusion criteria, but registration process will include a pre-registration stage with final confirmation after reviewing all applications.
How much is it?
Participation is free of charge and includes all scientific and social sessions, coffee breaks and lunches throughout the course week.
Travel and accomodation have to be arranged and covered by the participants/their institutions.
