Place of work / study:
University of Sydney
Area of Research:
Cognitive neuroscience of dementia; early detection of younger-onset dementia
How is your research funded:
Through competitive funding/fellowships from the Australian Research Council, National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, and the Department of Health and Aged care of Australia
Tell us a little about yourself:
As my name would suggest, I’m originally from Ireland and completed all of my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Trinity College Dublin. I then caught the travel bug and went travelling around South East Asia before relocating to Melbourne and eventually settled in Sydney. I am a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Sydney, where I lead the MIND lab. Our work focuses on trying to improve the early and accurate diagnosis of younger-onset dementia, uncovering disease mechanisms that might pave the way for new treatment targets, and raising awareness and understanding of how to live well with dementia.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I used to be a competitive gymnast and my Dad always jokes that, growing up, I spent more time upside down than upright!
Why did you choose to work in dementia research?
As a child I was always interested in memory, as this was a particular strength of mine. I could remember details and facts that others often forgot, and I would frequently be called on to adjudicate in arguments! I never had any strong desire for a particular career but was always very curious and loved learning. Around the time that I had to make my university choices, my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This was a defining moment for me as she had been such a strong and independent woman, who prided herself on her formidable memory. Watching her memories gradually fade away was incredibly difficult but set me on the path I have chosen today – trying to unravel the secrets of the brain so that we can help those affected by neurodegenerative disorders.
What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
As tempting as it might be, do not compare yourself to others. Everyone’s research journey is different and you have to focus on what you are doing and why are you doing it. Collaborate wisely and don’t forget to enjoy the process. This is the best job in the world!
What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
I’m not reading anything right now.
Favourite film of all time?
I don’t have a favourite film but I really love the animated movie “Up”. It makes me laugh and cry in equal measure!
Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?
I love walking and try to walk 10km every day. I also really enjoy playing with my two sons, Fionn and Oisín. They are the perfect antidote after a stressful day.
