Supporting people with language-led dementia – Anna Volkmer
06/09/2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Join us for our September Forum webinar featuring Dr Anna Volkmer (UCL) talking about her work on supporting people with language-led dementia, on the 6th of September 1-2 pm.
Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) describes a group of language led dementias associated with Alzheimer’s disease and Frontotemporal dementia. There are three main PPA variants, logopenic, nonfluent and semantic PPA. People who with different variants of PPA will experience different speech and language difficulties which will progress differently over time. Given the communication difficulties that people experience, speech and language therapy can be a useful approach to support people and their families. Communication partner training is one such approach that supports both the person and the people around them to have better conversations. Better Conversations with PPA (BCPPA) is one such intervention that has been coproduced with people with PPA and their families. Not only BCPPA has been shown to changes behaviours in conversations, it also has the potential to improve quality of life and maintain relationships.
