Tell us a little about yourself:
I live in North Wales in the UK and for most of my life I was self employed running a Custom Motorcycle shop. For those who don’t know me, I have a long term diagnosis of Emphysema and Mixed Dementia, consisting of Vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Since recieving my diagnosis, I and my wife Jayne have spent a lot of time raising awareness and speaking to others about dementia all over the UK, in Europe and internationally, as far away as Australia and Japan. I have been fortunate enought to become an Ambassador’s for Alzheimer’s Society UK and the National Association of Care Caterers, promoting the value of nutrition and hydration aswell as a Champion for ‘Join Dementia Research’. Most recently I was delighted to be selected as Chair of the European Working Group of People With Dementia, (EWGPWD) facilitated by Alzheimer Europe and become an Honorary Lecturer teaching MSc Dementia Studies at Bangor University.
It was important to me that things improved closer to home, so I Co Founded the 3Nations Dementia Working Group (3NDWG, England, N.Ireland and Wales) facilitated by Alzheimer’s Society, and advised and contributed to the Wales Dementia Action Plan, sat on their Dementia Oversite of Implementation Impact Group, and on the Evaluation Advisory board. Together with his wife Jayne Goodrick, they are on several advisory boards/steering groups for research projects and studies. I also opened up in the Documentary titled ‘Living With Dementia, Chris’s story’ for BBC’s Panorama and in a BBC Wales documentary’Week In Week Out’, titled ‘Who Will Look After Mum, Dad or Me’.
